A day in the Pearl

Kraig had an unusual shift at work last Saturday- one where he was both leaving and returning from work while Owen was awake.  We took advantage of that by driving Kraig to work and picking him up.  Instead of making 2 round trips, we stayed in the Pearl District and hung out for the afternoon.

Our first stop was at Whole Foods for lunch.  If you've never eaten in the cafe of a Whole Foods, I highly recommend it!  I know, it seems like a weird spot for lunch but we had a coupon for a free slice of pizza so I figured we may as well use it.  We got the pizza- which was really 3 slices worth- and a cup of soup.  Total cost for lunch?  $3.49.  I love couponing!

Owen and I shared lunch and then walked to Powell's Books.  We'd been there before, you know, back when we were tourists and not residents of Portland :)  It was fun to check out the board book section for the little tots and sit at a table and read lots and LOTS of books to Owen.  I had to tear him away when it was time to move on to the next stop.... the Jamison Square Fountain!

We've been experiencing fantastic warm fall weather here in Portland.  We can expect mid-60's to 80 degree weather on any given day.  It was one of those unusually warm days so we decided to play outside at the fountain.  There were tons of little kiddos splashing around (again, they chlorinate their fountains here)

I didn't get any photos because I wanted to keep an eye on Owen but he loved it.  He was much more outgoing the last time, and took straight to splashing around in the water and yelling "Pash pash pash!"
Again, I had to tear him away when I decided he needed desperately to get a snack and something to drink.  We walked the block and a half to Kraig's store and took a break with Kraig (good timing!)

We had about 90 more minutes to kill before Kraig was done working so we headed around the corner to Green Frog Toys.  Owen LOVED it here and I have the pictures to prove it (from my camera phone- sorry for the poor quality!)

Playing with the "choo choos"

So what if he likes doll houses?
... and purses :)

We played for about an hour and found lots and lots of great gift ideas for upcoming holidays (wink wink).

It was time to grab some food for dinner as well as an ornamental Kale flower for our vase.  We picked up Kraig from work and got to see this mountain on the way home.

We love Portland.

You say "this mountain" as if it's any old mountain. Come now. The highest mtn in Oregon? The defining peak of the city of roses? You need to start calling it Hood if you're going to be a local. Still, nice shot. And sounds like a nice outing to downtown. How long does it take to get to Powell's from home?

Oh, trust me Paul, there was a hint of irony in my "this mountain" comment. Next time I will be sure to say MT HOOD IN ALL OF HER GLORY AND HONOR FOREVER AND EVER AMEN!

In all seriousness, there are few things better than looking up above the roadway ahead and being caught off guard by a HUGE FREAKING MOUNTAIN! But you knew that.

It takes about 9 minutes (+ about 20 minutes to park!) to get to Powells. On the bikes it's likely 30 minutes.
